“Kindergarten”
Pattern Collection
Captivated by the work of Saul Bass and Matisse, “Kindergarten” began as a personal 30-day challenge to turn inspiration into something new. Through experimentation with cut paper, a pattern collection emerged that infuses the joy and playfulness of this art style into everyday life at home.
Inspiration
Saul Bass’ and Matisse’s work has always drawn me in. With stark contrast and seeming simplicity, both creatives are experts in capturing a mood and your attention quickly, leaving paper shapes rugged with endearing humanity.
Experimentation
Colored cardstock and rubber cement became my best friends as I indulged in play, creating cut paper compositions. Some days I started with sketches, other days I followed wherever the scissors would take me.
Motifs
I then curated a collection of patterns from the experiments — scanning, digitizing, and tiling in Adobe Illustrator. A shared language of fluid geometric shapes and fresh energizing color unifies the work.
